My HUD for some reason doesn’t deploy fully since yesterday with only 20,000kms on the car. I’m sure warranty will cover it, but I certainly don’t relish the idea of owning modern cars outside the warranty.

All these cameras, sensors and touchscreens. I don’t see how any modern vehicle could be functional in 20 or 30 years.

I was thinking the same thing the other day while driving a Mazda3. The HUD seems really flimsy, it was a 2017 and it seemed to deploy super slow.

It’s so flimsy. I like having it, but it’s a pain when cleaning. Have to be very careful

I suppose a lot of features will just become useless and not be touched by people owning them when they get older. Like early carphones now.

I agree to a point. Car phones were just a feature. Increasingly the infotainment system controls vehicle/driving functions. Same with the sensors and camera, they can directly control braking and acceleration.

I am not sure if they can be left in disrepair

I realize that electronics have come a long way over the last 30years but it’s not like early LCD readouts were renown for their rock solid durability and ease of repair. Of course things are better now but they are still effectively just a screen with processors and miscellanious circuits, It’s only a matter of time before it becomes impossible to restore cars and I think we’re quickly approaching that if not already there.

I had a rental - maybe a Chrysler 300? And it seemed like half of the climate control buttons were touch screen and half were actual buttons. So when the screen eventually fails, you could turn it on and control temperature but not control what vents were on or fan speed. Something weird like that. As someone who has never owned a new car, I worry for my future.

new cars are nice, except when they aren’t...

Embedded tech in vehicles is very much a double edged sword, especially when it comes to the vehicles longevity and long term desirability. Planned obsolescence, I guess.

Vehicles are often considered to be disposable by your average person. Drive it until the new wears off, then trade it for something that tickles your fancy at that particular moment... Eternal car payments be damned.

If the majority of used cars are obviously obsolete to the point of being unpleasant to use, or the necessary-to-drive embedded tech is too expensive to maintain, it just pushes that many more people into new vehicles. People who otherwise wouldn’t (or shouldn’t) buy new will end up signing on the dotted line for something new, which is a big win for the manufacturers and finance companies.

I did have to replace a few in my time as a Mazda tech, but not enough to notice a root cause.
